The correlation between H. pylori infection and COVID-19
Authors
Abstract:
SARS CoV-2 and H. pylori are pathogens associated with the most common viral and bacterial infections globally. The co-infection of pathogenic bacteria and SARS CoV-2 represented a true health challenge. The current study aimed to estimate the incidence of H. pylori in patients with COVID-19. For this purpose, 130 patients with RT-PCR confirmed SARS CoV-2 infection as well as 130 apparently healthy persons were included in this study. All of them were subjected to the diagnosis of anti-HP IgG as well as total WBC, neutrophils and lymphocyte counts. The results found that COVID-19 infection is more frequent in male than female especially those aging between (15-25 years old). COVID-19 patients were detected to have increased WBC and neutrophils count (P value = 0.02, 0.000) and decreased lymphocytes compared to the healthy persons. A considerable correlation between H pylori and SARS CoV-2 was discovered, especially in females. The current study concluded that H. pylori infected patients may be more susceptible to COVID-19 than other persons without H. pylori infections.
